Reiki: The Ancient Healing Art That Could Change Your Life.
I still remember the moment Reiki truly entered my life. Not just as something I practised, but as something I lived. Over the past 26 years, Reiki has been one of my greatest pillars of strength — carrying me through the toughest storms, physically, mentally, and emotionally — and it continues to do so every single day. It's this profound, personal experience that led me to found GetCalmer and dedicate my life to sharing this remarkable healing art with others right here in Sonning Common, Oxfordshire and beyond.
Whether you're completely new to Reiki and simply curious, or you're a seasoned practitioner looking to deepen your practice, this post is for you. I want to take you on a journey through what Reiki really is, what you can expect from a session, and why it might just be the missing piece in your wellbeing puzzle.
So… What Actually Is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a Japanese healing technique developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. The word itself breaks down beautifully: Rei meaning 'universal' and Ki meaning 'life force energy' — the same energy known as Chi in Chinese medicine or Prana in Ayurvedic tradition.
The idea is simple but profound: when our life force energy is balanced and flowing freely, we feel well. When it becomes blocked or depleted — through stress, trauma, illness, or simply the demands of modern life — we begin to feel it. Emotionally, physically, mentally.
Reiki works by supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself — not by fixing or curing in the conventional sense, but by creating the conditions for deep rest, restoration, and balance.
What Happens in a Reiki Treatment? (Your Questions Answered)
One of the most common things I hear from new clients is: 'I don't really know what to expect.' That's completely understandable — Reiki can sound a little mysterious at first. So let me walk you through it.
Before Your Session
We'll begin with a brief chat about how you're feeling and what you're hoping to get from the session. There's no pressure — you share only what you're comfortable with. I'll then invite you to lie fully clothed on a comfortable treatment couch in my calm, peaceful home treatment room in Sonning Common.
During Your Session
Using a gentle, light-touch (or sometimes hands hovering just above the body), I channel Reiki energy through a series of hand positions across the head, torso, and limbs. There is no manipulation, no pressure, and nothing invasive. Many clients report feeling a deep sense of warmth, tingling, or heaviness — that delicious sensation of the body finally letting go.
Some people drift into a meditative state, others experience vivid colours or emotions surfacing gently. Some simply fall into the most restful sleep they've had in months. Every experience is unique — and all of it is valid.
After Your Session
We'll take a few quiet moments to bring you gently back, and I'll share any observations from the session. You'll be offered a glass of water and time to gather yourself before heading home. I always recommend drinking plenty of water over the next 24–48 hours as the body continues to process and integrate the healing.
What Can Reiki Help With?
Reiki is a holistic therapy — meaning it works on the whole person, not just a single symptom. People come to me for Reiki treatments in Sonning Common for all kinds of reasons, including:
Stress, anxiety, and overwhelm
Sleep difficulties and chronic fatigue
Grief, loss, and emotional trauma
Physical pain and tension
Low mood and lack of motivation
Supporting recovery from illness or surgery
A general desire to feel more balanced, calm, and centred
Spiritual growth and self-development
It's important to note that Reiki is a complementary therapy — it works beautifully alongside conventional medicine and other treatments, not in place of them. Always continue with any prescribed medical treatment and speak with your GP if you have health concerns.
How Often Should You Have Reiki?
This is one of the questions I'm asked most often, and the answer is: it depends on you. Every person is different, and so is their healing journey.
As a general guide:
For general wellbeing and stress relief: Monthly sessions work wonderfully as a form of regular 'maintenance' — like a service for your nervous system.
For a specific issue or period of difficulty: A course of weekly or fortnightly sessions is often most effective, allowing the body to build on each treatment.
After illness, surgery, or significant life events: More frequent initial sessions followed by a gradual reduction is often the approach I recommend.
We'll always discuss what feels right for you in your initial consultation. There's no hard sell — just honest guidance based on 26 years of working with people on their wellness journeys.
5 Practical Tips to Get the Most from Your Reiki Session
A little preparation goes a long way. Here's how to help yourself get the most from your treatment:
1. Arrive with an open mind — You don't need to 'believe' in Reiki for it to work. Curiosity and willingness are all that's needed.
2. Avoid a heavy meal beforehand — A light stomach means your body can direct its energy towards healing, not digestion.
3. Wear comfortable clothing — You'll remain fully clothed throughout, so loose, comfortable layers are ideal.
4. Hydrate well — Drink plenty of water before and after your session to support the process.
5. Give yourself time afterwards — Try not to rush back into a busy day. Even 30 minutes of quiet time post-session can deepen the benefit.
