How to Create a Simple Daily Self-Care Ritual That Actually Works

If you're a woman who's spent the last few years putting everyone else first — this one's for you.

The children. The career. The partner. The ageing parents. The household that somehow only runs because of you.

And somewhere along the way — quietly, gradually — you stopped making the list at all.

We all know we should look after ourselves. We read the articles, we save the Instagram posts, we tell ourselves that this week will be different.

And then life happens.

The school run, the inbox, the endless mental load of keeping everything and everyone going. Self-care slides back down the list — again.

But here's what I've learned from years of teaching yoga and working with women across Oxfordshire and beyond: the reason most self-care routines don't last isn't a lack of willpower. It's that they're too complicated, too time-consuming and frankly, too much to add to an already full life.

The secret is simpler than you think.

Start Smaller Than You Think You Should

Most women come to me wanting to overhaul everything at once. A 6am yoga practice, a meditation before breakfast, journalling, green smoothies — the works.

And within a week, it's all gone.

Instead, start with just five minutes. Seriously. Five minutes of intentional time for yourself every single day builds a habit far more effectively than an hour-long routine that you dread and eventually abandon.

Ask yourself: what is the smallest thing I could do today that would make me feel better?

That's your starting point.

Anchor It to Something You Already Do

The most effective self-care rituals don't require carving out a new chunk of time — they attach themselves to something that already exists in your day.

Your morning coffee. The school run. Your lunch break. The moment you get into bed.

Try this — before your first cup of tea or coffee:

  • Sit quietly for just one minute

  • Inhale slowly for 4 counts

  • Hold gently for 4 counts

  • Exhale fully for 6 counts

  • Repeat 5 times

That's it. You've just given your nervous system a reset before the day has even begun.

Or try these 3 gentle movements when you wake up:

  • A slow neck roll — left and right

  • A shoulder stretch — roll them back, open the chest

  • A forward fold — let your head hang heavy, breathe into your back

No mat needed. No kit required. Just you and two minutes of movement before the world needs anything from you.

Breathe Like You Mean It

Breathwork is one of the most powerful and underrated self-care tools available to every single one of us — and it costs nothing.

When we're stressed, our breathing becomes shallow and fast, which signals to our nervous system that we're in danger. Consciously slowing and deepening the breath tells the body it's safe to relax.

Try this simple practice:

  • Sit comfortably or lie down

  • Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 counts

  • Hold gently for 2 counts

  • Exhale fully through the mouth for 6 counts

  • Repeat for 5 minutes

Do this before school pick up, before a difficult meeting, or last thing at night. You'll be amazed at how quickly it shifts your state.

Move Your Body — Even Just a Little

You don't need a 60 minute yoga class to feel the benefits of movement. Even 10 minutes of gentle, intentional movement can shift your mood, release tension and bring you back into your body after a day spent in your head.

Try a simple morning stretch sequence:

  • Cat-cow stretches to wake up the spine

  • A gentle seated twist each side

  • Child's pose for as long as you need

  • A few rounds of sun salutation if you have the energy

The key is consistency over intensity. Ten minutes every day will always serve you better than an hour once a week.

Protect It Like an Appointment

Here's the thing nobody tells you about self-care: you have to treat it like a meeting you can't cancel.

Not a maybe. Not a if-I-have-time. A non-negotiable.

Put it in your diary. Tell your family. Close the door. Even five minutes behind a locked bathroom door counts.

Women are extraordinarily good at showing up for everyone else. The radical act is learning to show up for yourself with the same commitment.

When You're Ready to Go Deeper

A daily ritual is the foundation — but sometimes five minutes isn't enough. Sometimes you need to completely step away from your life, be held by a community of like-minded women, and remember who you are beneath all the doing.

For so many women a retreat can be genuinely life changing. Not indulgent. Not selfish. Essential.

Whether it's a two hour morning close to home in Oxfordshire or five days of yoga and sunshine in Barcelona — the impact of giving yourself that space is something women tell me they feel for weeks and months afterwards.

Here's what's coming up at GetCalmer this season:

The Summer Solstice Retreat on 20th June is the perfect first step — just two hours, and a morning completely dedicated to you. Women leave feeling lighter, clearer and genuinely restored.

Rebecca Dobson

Rebecca founded GetCalmer in 2001, with a vision to pass on her knowledge and passion of holistic therapies to others and ultimately to help people "get calmer".

Having a sales background, Rebecca knew only too well the stressful effects that working in a pressurised environment can have on the body, and how little people take care of themselves.

With this in mind, Rebecca followed her passion and spent a year re-training in various holistic therapies, including massage and Reiki, gaining experience working privately, in spa’s and practicing onsite massage in the workplace.

Since completing her Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training in 2006, Rebecca has been taught by many worldwide accredited yoga teachers over the years, including Claire Missingham, Kathryn Budig, Jason Crandell and the most influential Dr. Francoise Freedman, Director and Founder of Birthlight. All of which have shaped her in to the yoga teacher she is today. Rebecca would describe herself as a down to earth teacher and therapist who is personable, creative, patient and intuitive. She lightly weaves yoga philosophy and anatomy into her classes, making them well-rounded and accessible. In her opinion, yoga isn’t just about busting a pose, it’s so much more than that; yoga can help you understand yourself, others and the world we live in; all you need is an open mind.

Rebecca’s next mission is to spread the word to every Woman on the profound benefits of yoga to help improve and enhance Women’s health. Who knows at this point where it will lead her, but I bet you any money it’ll be something truly exciting!
