When the Ground Shifts: How Well Woman Yoga Helped Me Heal in Perimenopause

There wasn’t one big moment when perimenopause arrived. No flashing light or dramatic change. Just a slow unraveling. A fog creeping in around the edges of my energy. Mood swings I couldn’t explain. Anxiety rising like an uncontrollable demon within. Sleep that no longer came easily. A sense of not quite feeling like myself anymore.

At first, I ignored it. Or rather, I overrode it.

I kept practising and teaching yoga the way I always had. Strong. Dynamic. Pushing through. It had worked for me for years — until it didn’t.

My body wasn’t whispering. It was shouting.

But I wasn’t listening.

I began to feel pain. Back pain. Fatigue that clung to me for days. Injuries I couldn’t quite explain. I was still doing all the right things — but my body had changed. And I hadn’t caught up.

That was my wake-up call.

What I needed wasn’t more power or structure or drive. I needed space. Slowness. Soothing. A way to move that listened to the new rhythm of my body — not fight against it.

That’s when I found Well Woman Yoga Therapy.

This practice changed everything. It didn’t ask me to fix or force anything. It asked me to soften. To tune in, to nurture my body. To honour the shifts happening within me — hormonal, emotional, energetic — and respond with compassion.

I began sleeping better. My nervous system started to settle. My cycles (and later, post-cycles) felt less like battles and more like waves I could ride. It was the first time in a long time that I felt safe in my own body. An acceptance of this inevitable change.

So I trained. And now I share this work with other women — because no one should have to walk this path alone or uninformed. Your body is not betraying you. It’s becoming something new.

Well Woman Yoga is more than yoga. It’s a lifeline. A toolkit. A empowering reclaiming.

Rebecca Dobson

Rebecca founded GetCalmer in 2001, with a vision to pass on her knowledge and passion of holistic therapies to others and ultimately to help people "get calmer".

Having a sales background, Rebecca knew only too well the stressful effects that working in a pressurised environment can have on the body, and how little people take care of themselves.

With this in mind, Rebecca followed her passion and spent a year re-training in various holistic therapies, including massage and Reiki, gaining experience working privately, in spa’s and practicing onsite massage in the workplace.

Since completing her Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training in 2006, Rebecca has been taught by many worldwide accredited yoga teachers over the years, including Claire Missingham, Kathryn Budig, Jason Crandell and the most influential Dr. Francoise Freedman, Director and Founder of Birthlight. All of which have shaped her in to the yoga teacher she is today. Rebecca would describe herself as a down to earth teacher and therapist who is personable, creative, patient and intuitive. She lightly weaves yoga philosophy and anatomy into her classes, making them well-rounded and accessible. In her opinion, yoga isn’t just about busting a pose, it’s so much more than that; yoga can help you understand yourself, others and the world we live in; all you need is an open mind.

Rebecca’s next mission is to spread the word to every Woman on the profound benefits of yoga to help improve and enhance Women’s health. Who knows at this point where it will lead her, but I bet you any money it’ll be something truly exciting!
